Work is underway on the new Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center located within the “Medical City” at Lake Nona, FL, and the campus is beginning to materialize. The 1.2 million square foot facility is slated to open in fall 2012.

Glazing Consultants International, LLC, was selected to provide building envelope consulting services for all phases of the project and is currently performing quality assurance, site inspections and product submittal reviews.

The construction of the campus was broken into four construction packages. Three General Contractors have been contracted to complete the work: Brasfield & Gorrie(the tunnel complex, the hospital, outpatient clinic, warehouse and parking garage); Turner Construction (the nursing home and the domiciliary) and James A. Cummings, Inc.(the Central Energy Plant).

“It is an exciting and challenging project to be involved in because it was awarded as multiple contracts,” said Peter Craig, Senior Consultant at GCI. “In addition to the size and complexity of the campus, you also have the diversity that three separate general contractors provide with different subcontractors, manufacturers, products and construction materials. All of this combines to make it a dynamic and rewarding project that will ultimately serve those who have helped serve their county.”

A 65-acre tract of land was purchased on Lake Nona Boulevard in Orlando across from the new University of Central Florida College of Medicine, and near the Nemours Children’s Hospital currently under construction. The facility will be the first VA Medical Center built on a completely new “greenfield” site since the West Palm Beach VAMC opened in 1995.

A joint venture team of RLF and Ellerbe Becket designed the facility to achieve LEED Silver Certification. It will be a full-service VA medical center providing acute care, complex specialty care and advanced diagnostic services through a 134-bed hospital, an outpatient clinic, a 118-bed nursing home and a 60-bed domiciliary. The site will also contain a veterans benefits office that will help veterans to obtain compensation, pensions or other financial benefits earned by military service.

Currently more than 90,000 veterans from the region are enrolled in the VA health care system and receive health care through six different outpatient clinics in the region. The VA estimates 400,000 veterans reside in the service area of the new facility.

Although GCI was mentioned in an Orlando Sentinel article about the investigation into employment practices of some contractors and subcontractors on the new Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center near Lake Nona, the company is not a part of any investigation and has not been asked to provide employment records by state or federal agencies.Read More
