Security and Bomb Blast

Physical security of the exterior building envelope for events such as looting, bomb blasts and civil unrest is an important part of any disaster plan. GCI has been active with security codes, standards and designs for many years. We are currently helping develop security standards for windows and doors at ASTM. We have designed and successfully bomb blast tested a retrofit laminated glass system for existing windows and doors. And, we are considered an authority on this subject as evidenced by public speaking engagements, published articles and participation at security and terrorism workshops.

There are many potential physical security concerns for the exterior building envelope, including:
  • Breaking and entering
  • Bomb blasts
  • Explosions
  • Looting
  • Riots
  • Attacks with weapons
Glazing, windows, doors, wall systems and roofs can be designed to resist all of these threats. To do so, appropriate design criteria must be developed utilizing theoretical calculations and performance tests.

GCI has designed physical security elements for the exterior building envelope for both new construction and existing buildings. There are many choices today for security threats, with differing levels of performance and protection. GCI is well qualified to consult and assist in making the correct choice. We are independent consultants and do not sell or have special interests with any products. GCI provides unbiased competent advice clear of any special interests.
